Fish Description

The plaice has a fairly large head. The mouth is very small and it has small teeth. The eyes are quite large and the left eye is located further back than the right. The tail is large but otherwise the fin is typical for a flatfish. The colour is varied depending on the surface and colour of the seabed. Usually it is brown with a seaweed-green tinge on the dark side with red or orange spots. The left side is usually white. The habitat of the plaice is the sand or clay seabed or near bottom, from 0-200 m. It often burrows into the seabed so that only the eyes are visible. Its diet is varied, mostly invertebrates of all kinds, crustaceans, small crabs, worms etc., as well as various small fish like sandeel.
